Taipei, July 18, 2025 — Chunghwa Telecom today announced the official activation of the Southeast Asia–Japan Cable 2 (SJC2), a major international submarine cable system jointly invested by leading telecom operators across Asia. The completion and launch of SJC2 marks a significant advancement in regional digital infrastructure, designed to meet the growing demands of AI applications and diversified network resilience.
Spanning approximately 10,500 kilometers, SJC2 connects key locations across Southeast and Northeast Asia, including Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Mainland China, South Korea and Japan. Taiwan features a dual landing design with cable stations in Tamsui and Fangshan, ensuring route diversity and enhancing the resilience and stability of Taiwan’s international connectivity.
Built with cutting-edge optical wavelength division multiplexing technology, SJC2 delivers up to 126 Tbps of transmission capacity. This breakthrough significantly boosts network performance across the Asia-Pacific region, supporting the rapid growth of bandwidth-intensive applications such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things. The cable system is poised to empower emerging technologies and meet the surging demand for digital connectivity.
The launch of SJC2 underscores the strategic importance of the Asia-Pacific region in the global digital infrastructure landscape. It offers broader coverage, ultra-high bandwidth capacity, and ultra-low latency connectivity, fully supporting next-generation cloud computing, AI-driven services, and real-time data exchange among major Asian economies.
Dr. Chien Chih-cheng, Chairman of Chunghwa Telecom, stated, "The SJC2 cable is one of the achievements of Chunghwa Telecom's 'Sea, Land, Star, and Sky' infrastructure development. Chunghwa Telecom will continue to take concrete actions to enhance the digital resilience of Taiwan's communication network and empower AI to drive industry transformation and change."
