Chunghwa Telecom and NTT Embark on a Pioneering Collaboration for International APN and Showcase Results at NTT R&D Forum 2024

Tokyo –Nov. 25, 2024 – Chunghwa Telecom and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly advance the evolution and implementation of Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) [1] technology on October 25, 2023. The companies launched the world’s first international connection with IOWN All-Photonics Network (APN) [2], successfully connecting Taipei and Tokyo on August 29, 2024. This innovative application proof of concept was showcased at the prestigious NTT R&D Forum 2024 [3]. Chunghwa Telecom’s CTO & SEVP, Chih-Hsiung Huang attended the event to deepen technical cooperation and friendship between the two companies. Chunghwa Telecom and NTT will continue to collaborate on various IOWN application scenarios, accelerating the global promotion of IOWN technology.

Chunghwa Telecom and NTT leverage this international APN connection to unveil an ultra-low-latency interactive immersive video show. This groundbreaking application allows users in both Taiwan and Japan to join a virtual space to watch virtual reality (VR) performances and interact with each other. With the high bandwidth and low latency characteristics of IOWN APN technology, cloud-rendered high-quality VR images significantly lighten the load on user-end devices and reduce VR-induced sickness. The potential impact of this innovation on consumer virtual exhibitions and remote industrial operations is significant, opening up a world of exciting possibilities.

Chunghwa Telecom’s CTO & SEVP, Chih-Hsiung Huang, states, “Chunghwa Telecom is dedicated to the development of next-generation ICT technologies, enhancing communication and computing performance, and promoting energy conservation, carbon reduction, and sustainable development. The launch of the world’s first international APN connection will provide high-bandwidth, low-latency transmission benefits for many innovative application services and support distributed cross-cloud computing. Chunghwa Telecom will continue to work with like-minded partners to advance the implementation of IOWN technology, offering better services to our customers and creating a smarter, better living environment for society.”

NTT’s CTO and SEVP, Katsuhiko Kawazoe commented, “I am very pleased to announce a distinguished demonstration of real-time virtual space interaction between Japan and Taiwan. Using the world’s first international APN connection, we also demonstrate at NTT R&D Forum 2024 of ultra-high-speed data replication system that minimizes disaster recovery (DR) time and remote media production that enables flexible resource allocations. Those demonstrations successfully illustrate the business value of IOWN APN connection, such as low-latency, low-jitter, and energy efficiency. NTT continues to collaborate with many partners, including IOWN Global Forum members, to develop IOWN technologies and use cases, and provide various IOWN services globally for a sustainable world.”

Chunghwa Telecom actively participates in the IOWN Global Forum [4], and will integrate IOWN technology’s All-Photonics Network (APN) and Data-Centric Infrastructure (DCI) as core driving technologies. Additionally, Chunghwa Telecom is involved in several important international organizations, including serving as a board member of the Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance (NGMN) and a member of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Collaborating with globally leading telecom operators and technology companies, Chunghwa Telecom works closely with partners to establish next-generation ICT standards, create an industry ecosystem, and deploy innovative application services, bringing a more advanced digital life to industries, the public, and society.

NTT leads IOWN Global Forum as a board member and collaborates with diverse members to develop All-Photonics Network (APN) and Data-Centric Infrastructure (DCI), and a series of real use cases. Collaboration with global partners enables to develop technologies, clarify emerging business cases, create global ecosystem, and deploy IOWN services. Through this global collaboration, NTT continuously creates a next-generation high-performance and energy-efficient ICT infrastructure, IOWN, for a sustainable world.
