Chunghwa Telecom Expands Healthcare Innovations Across Borders to Thailand Collaboration with Overbrook Hospital and Changhua Christian Hospital to Promote International Healthcare Equity Through Digital Technology

Bangkok Thailand, September 15th, 2023 – Chunghwa Telecom announced its participation in the "2023 Taiwan-Thailand Industry Chain Summit" held in Bangkok, Thailand, organized by the Thai Chamber of Commerce on September 12th, and declared the successful completion of the first phase of the Overbrook Hospital telemedicine project in northern Thailand. On the same day, under the witness of Mr. Ivan Lin, the President of Chunghwa Telecom, a memorandum of cooperation (MOU) for the second phase was signed by Mr. Richard Chen, Chairman of the Thai subsidiary, Dr. Witoon, Director of Overbrook Hospital in northern Thailand, and Kao Hsiau-ling, CEO of CCH’s Overseas Medical Mission Center. This partnership expands the scope of cooperation to the level of smart hospitals, marking the realization of Chunghwa Telecom's commitment to gradually implement and enhance digital and medical equity on an international scale.

Chunghwa Telecom's Thai subsidiary has been continuously cultivating the local ICT market, achieving success in topics such as smart cities and smart energy, and promoting diversification of development between Taiwan and Thailand. This collaboration extends the smart medical solution from Bangkok to the Chiang Rai region in northern Thailand. It utilizes Chunghwa Telecom's telemedicine platform (SynDr.) to connect medical sensing devices on the healthcare side, integrate with the hospital's medical information system, and provide teleconsultation services through video conferencing. It also records patient physiological measurements and case information. This initiative offers telemedicine services to Overbrook Hospital, Chiang Khong, and Mae Sai border clinics, improving the quality of healthcare services for border residents and streamlining the workflow for healthcare professionals. Overbrook Hospital is poised to become a model smart hospital in northern Thailand.

Chunghwa Telecom has already implemented telemedicine initiatives in Taiwan through the "4G Operation and 5G Network Construction Project for Indigenous and Remote Area Health Centers," combining 5G, 4G, fixed networks, and telemedicine platforms. This includes features such as appointment booking, multi-source video consultations, consultation records, and cloud-based recording. It has assisted remote health centers in mountainous areas to establish telemedicine specialty clinics, with 11 successful applications nationwide. This collaboration in the Chiang Rai region of northern Thailand represents the best practices derived from replicating Taiwan's experience abroad, aiming to achieve digital equity and promote healthcare equity.

Ivan Lin, the President of Chunghwa Telecom, stated, "Under the government's New Southbound Policy, healthcare institutions focus on medical needs in a particular country or region. Chunghwa Telecom is committed to various applications of 5G in smart healthcare. This collaboration utilizes the core capabilities of 5G, such as high-speed and low latency, to integrate ICT and the medical industry. In the future, Chunghwa Telecom will continue to expand smart healthcare applications, supporting the Broad Alliance strategy and creating new opportunities in emerging markets in the Southbound direction."

Dr. Mu- Kuan Chen, President of Changhua Christian Hospital (CCH), mentioned that Changhua Christian Hospital established a sisterhood relationship with Overbrook Hospital in 2010 and has been responsible for medical cooperation in Thailand since 2018. Kao Hsiau-ling, CEO of CCH’s Overseas Medical Mission Center emphasized that setting up demonstration points is the best strategy to market Taiwan's smart healthcare. Due to the lack of healthcare services in border areas, Changhua Christian Hospital, in collaboration with Chunghwa Telecom and Overbrook Hospital, established telemedicine demonstration points to provide high-quality and safe services to border residents, demonstrating Changhua Christian Hospital's spirit of borderless care.

Dr. Witoon Yongmethawut, Director of Overbrook Hospital, emphasized, "The demand for smart healthcare and telemedicine in Thailand is rapidly growing. We are pleased to facilitate this collaboration, leveraging Chunghwa Telecom's technology and integration capabilities, Changhua Christian Hospital's successful experience and insights, to promote the establishment of telemedicine services between Overbrook Hospital and border clinics. With the joint efforts of all three parties, we are certain that we will have a significant and meaningful impact on the field of smart healthcare in Thailand in the future."
