TAIPEI, Taiwan, R.O.C. October 21, 2014 – Chunghwa Telecom, the largest integrated telecom service provider in Taiwan (TAIEX: 2412, NYSE: CHT) (“Chunghwa” or “the Company”), signed a landmark agreement together with leading Asia telecommunication carriers to build the “New Cross Pacific (NCP)” cable network, a multi-terabit submarine cable system providing direct fiber connectivity to five countries in the Trans-Pacific region.
Participants in the NCP consortium, including Chunghwa Telecom, KT Corporation, a US based company, and the major carriers from China, signed both the Construction and Maintenance Agreement along with the Supply Contract in Busan, Korea on 21st October 2014 for the construction, which is to begin in November of 2014 and is scheduled to be completed in the 2nd half of 2017.
NCP System, estimated to cost several hundred million US dollars measured a total length of about 14,000 km, will directly connect Mainland China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and North America, adopting Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technologies and the state-of-the art transmission system including digital coherent detection, Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (OADM) to provide a design capacity up to 80 Tbps, allowing the system to be future proof for more than 100Gbps technology upgrades to meet dynamic traffic requirements.
