Chunghwa Telecom and Ericsson Sign 5G-Advanced and AI Intelligent Network MoU at MWC 2026 to Accelerate 6G Evolution

Chunghwa Telecom and Ericsson announced the signing of the “2026 5G-Advanced and AI Intelligent Network Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)” at Mobile World Congress (MWC). The collaboration focuses on accelerating 5G-Advanced commercialization, advancing AI-RAN to enhance network intelligence and autonomy, and laying a strong foundation for the evolution toward 6G.

Under the MoU, Chunghwa Telecom and Ericsson will jointly drive 5G-Advanced service differentiation by leveraging advanced capabilities such as L4S (Low Latency, Low Loss, Scalable Throughput) and URLLC (Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications). These technologies will deliver stable, high-performance connectivity for latency-sensitive applications, such as cloud gaming and augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), ensuring consistently superior user experience.

To accelerate AI-driven network evolution, Chunghwa Telecom will leverage Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform (EIAP) and its rApps ecosystem to streamline network operations and advance toward greater network autonomy. In parallel, the two companies will embed AI across the RAN to enhance network performance while improving spectrum and energy efficiency. As AI-RAN becomes a strategic pillar in building intelligent networks, the evolution toward autonomous networks lays a crucial foundation for new business paradigms while supporting Chunghwa Telecom’s long-term sustainability goals.

As a critical step toward 6G evolution, Chunghwa Telecom and Ericsson recently announced the deployment of Ericsson’s triple-band FDD Massive MIMO radio on live network during the 2026 Taipei New Year’s Eve celebration — marking the first commercial deployment in Northeast Asia. Amid the surge in traffic during the high-density event, the deployment delivered a threefold increase in total network capacity. This achievement represents an important milestone, as FDD Massive MIMO is regarded as a key enabling technology for 6G. The two companies will continue deepening their strategic collaboration in 6G development, jointly exploring and validating use cases to build critical capabilities for future networks.

Rong-Shy Lin, President of Chunghwa Telecom, stated: “Guided by our strategic pillars of digital resilience, intelligence-driven innovation, and sustainable growth, Chunghwa Telecom continues to strengthen our 5G leadership while advancing pre-6G initiatives. We are proud to have been recognized by SPEEDTEST® as the Fastest Mobile Network in Taiwan for eight consecutive years. Through our expanded collaboration with Ericsson in 5G-Advanced and AI-RAN, we aim to continuously deliver superior user experiences while laying a strong foundation for the evolution toward the 6G and AI era.”

Chafic Nassif, President of Northeast Asia and Senior Vice President of Ericsson, said: “At Ericsson, we are committed to helping Communications Service Providers build high-performing, intelligent networks that unlock the full potential of 5G through AI and programmability. Chunghwa Telecom has long been a valued strategic partner, and we are pleased to further deepen our collaboration. By advancing 5G-Advanced capabilities and AI-RAN, we are enabling more autonomous, performance-driven networks that enhance user experience, improve operational efficiency, and lay a strong foundation for Taiwan’s evolution toward 6G.”

The MoU was signed by Kuo-Chi Huang, Vice President of Network Technology Group at Chunghwa Telecom and David Chou, President of Ericsson Taiwan, at the MWC 2026. Rong-Shy Lin, President of Chunghwa Telecom, and Chafic Nassif, President of Northeast Asia and Senior Vice President of Ericsson, served as witnesses.
