Chunghwa Telecom Partners with SES to Build North Asia’s First O3b mPower MEO Satellite Ground Station

Chunghwa Telecom has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday (21st) with SES, a leading global Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite operator based in Luxembourg, to establish North Asia’s first second-generation MEO O3b mPower ground station (Gateway) in Taiwan.

This collaboration will significantly enhance Taiwan’s MEO satellite data transmission capacity and service performance, delivering faster, more stable, and highly resilient satellite connectivity services. In addition to strengthening Taiwan’s critical communications infrastructure, the project will ensure that connections for key information are directly landed in Taiwan, while also promoting innovation in satellite applications and related industries.

Jia Chung-Yung, President of Chunghwa Telecom’s Network Technology Group, stated: Through this cooperation, SES will share practical experience in system deployment and operational management from its Satellite Innovation Centre in The Hague, the Netherlands, and showcase advanced applications including multi-orbit satellite communications integration, cloud connectivity, edge computing, Internet of Things (IoT) data analytics, and automated machine vision. The two parties will also jointly evaluate the establishment of a “Satellite Innovation Lab” in Taiwan, including the development of demonstration sites and relevant certification mechanisms. This initiative aims to help domestic companies accelerate technology validation and product adoption, enabling them to join SES’s global supply chain. By combining Taiwan’s strengths in semiconductors and advanced technology manufacturing, the partnership seeks to build a multi-party, win-win ecosystem spanning both hardware and software industries, further strengthening Taiwan’s strategic position and international competitiveness in the global satellite and space technology sector.

Jia Chung-Yung, President of Chunghwa Telecom’s Network Technology Group, emphasized: “Chunghwa Telecom continues to integrate diverse communication resources across sea, land, space, and air to build a new-generation network architecture that combines high resilience with technological innovation. Going forward, we will further expand our satellite communications deployment, promote diversified services and application innovation, and actively invest in the development of next-generation communications technologies. At the same time, we remain committed to our ESG sustainability goals, laying a solid long-term foundation for Taiwan’s communications resilience.”
