Chunghwa Telecom has been recognized by the Financial Times as one of the Asia-Pacific Climate Leaders 2025, ranking first among Taiwan’s telecom operators and third among its Asia-Pacific peers. Out of more than 1,500 companies assessed, the company placed in the top 6% for its outstanding carbon reduction performance. From 2018 to 2023, the company significantly reduced its greenhouse gas emissions intensity and excelled in carbon disclosure indicators, including Scope 3 emissions, CDP Climate Change questionnaire ratings, and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitments, earning high praise from the judging panel.
Chairman Chih-Cheng Chien expressed that the company is honored to receive this distinction, which affirms Chunghwa Telecom’s steady strategy and proactive actions toward achieving net-zero. He noted that the company advances its decarbonization goals through a dual strategy of “Technology-Driven Carbon Reduction” and “ Renewable Energy Usage,” embedding low-carbon sustainability into daily operations while also addressing biodiversity challenges. Recently, the company announced the issuance of the first biodiversity-inclusive sustainability bond in Taiwan’s telecom industry, underscoring its innovation in green finance and ecological conservation. Looking ahead, the company will continue to strengthen corporate governance, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship, leveraging innovative technologies to help Taiwanese enterprises tackle climate change.
Dual Strategy for Low-Carbon Sustainable Operations
On the technology-driven carbon reduction front, 85% of Chunghwa Telecom’s base stations now operate under the 5G C-RAN centralized architecture, further enhanced by smart energy-saving measures such as natural ventilation cooling, AI-powered monitoring, and dynamic sleep modes. The company is also investing in the research and development of IOWN’s All-Photonics Network (APN), which aims to reduce end-to-end opto-electronic conversions, thereby lowering transmission power consumption and enabling a more energy-efficient cutting-edge network. On the renewable energy usage front, Chunghwa Telecom continues to increase its green energy usage, reaching 72.604 million kWh in 2024 and securing 72,600 T-REC certificates, marking tangible progress toward its net-zero commitment.
Strengthening Environmental Governance Through International Standards
To strengthen environmental governance, Chunghwa Telecom has fully implemented international standards and auditing mechanisms. The company has completed its Group carbon footprint verification and obtained the ISO 14064-1 Certificate for Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory. It has also obtained ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification, ISO 50001 Energy Management System certification, and ISO 46001 Water Efficiency Management System certification across all operations, and has passed the highest-level compliance audit for the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations for five consecutive years. In 2024, the company reduced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions by 20.9% compared to the 2020 baseline year, equivalent to approximately 165,000 tonnes of CO₂, far exceeding its original reduction target and demonstrating a strong commitment and execution capability in carbon reduction.
Building Ecological Sustainability through Community and Nature Harmony
Chunghwa Telecom regards biodiversity as a critical component of environmental sustainability. Since 2024, the company has published TNFD reports in both Chinese and English, designating the year as its “Biodiversity Action Year.” Initiatives include launching Taiwan’s first “Black-faced Spoonbill Habitat AI Monitoring System” to safeguard habitats, implementing the “100-species conservation project” utilizing AIoT technology to monitor environmental factors and imagery, supporting the conservation of threatened plant species, and advancing an eight-year tree-planting initiative aiming to plant 150,000 trees and has already planted over 70,000 to date. Furthermore, the company has also pioneered a corporate volunteer citizen scientist program, training 127 tree carbon sink citizen scientists. Through these diverse activities, Chunghwa Telecom actively protects the environment and natural ecosystems.
ESG Excellence on the Global Stage
Chunghwa Telecom has delivered outstanding performance in multiple international sustainability rankings. In addition to being named one of the “Asia-Pacific Climate Leader 2025,” the company has secured the MSCI ESG “AAA” rating, received “A” ratings in both CDP’s 2024 Supplier Engagement Assessment and Climate Change questionnaire, and ranked in the global top 5% in S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook ESG scores for three consecutive years.
