Chunghwa Telecom Invests in AUG East Submarine Cable to Support AI Growth and Strengthen Network Resilience

[Taipei, Taiwan] – [2025.07.17] Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) participated in the signing ceremony of a new intra-Asia submarine cable system, named Asia United Gateway East Submarine Cable System (AUG East), held in Singapore. This new cable system is jointly invested by Chunghwa Telecom, Singtel, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, ARTERIA Networks, DREAMLINE, Globe Telecom, Telekom Malaysia and Unified National Networks, and is scheduled for completion in 2029.

This 8,900-kilometer-long intra-Asia submarine cable plans to land in Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Philippines, Korea, and Japan -- covering key markets across East Asia. Taiwan will host dual landing points in Yilan and Taitung, which do not overlap with the landing points of SJC2 cable, the other dual landing cable in Taiwan. This strategic configuration enhances Taiwan’s international network connectivity and provides greater diversity and resilience for our customers. The cable route will traverse the western waters of the Philippines, differing from the APRICOT cable currently under construction, which runs through the eastern waters. This diversified routing further strengthens regional network resilience.

Like the E2A Cable, CHT announced in March 2025, AUG East will also adopt the latest submarine cable technologies. Upon completion, the integration of these two systems will establish a high-speed digital corridor between major Asian and North American markets.  This advancement will reinforce Taiwan’s role as a digital hub in the Asia-Pacific region, supporting the surging demand for AI and Cloud applications.

The AUG East Consortium brings together leading regional telecom operators and global OTT providers, demonstrating a unified cross-border collaboration in response to global political and geopolitical shifts. Dr. Chien Chih-cheng, Chairman and CEO of Chunghwa Telecom, stated, "AUG East is an integral part of Chunghwa Telecom's ' Sea, Land, Sky, and Space' network strategy, underscoring our confidence in Taiwan’s emergence as a digital hub in the Asia-Pacific region. Chunghwa Telecom remains committed to taking concrete actions to strengthen Taiwan’s network resilience, empowering AI to drive industrial transformation and innovation".
