A First for Taiwan! Chunghwa Telecom’s RDMA over APN PoC Project Recognized in the IOWN Global Forum, Achieve Parity with International Industry Leaders

Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories has recently unveiled its significant step forward in cross-cloud network architecture, utilizing long-distance Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) technology for low-latency data transfer services. This innovation has led to Taiwan's first Proof of Concept (PoC) being recognized by the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network Global Forum (IOWN Global Forum), placing Chunghwa Telecom alongside global giants like NTT and Fujitsu in the field of next-generation ICT (Information and Communications Technology). This recognition highlights the significant contribution of Chunghwa Telecom's technology to the IOWN initiative, which aims to promote faster, lower-latency, and more energy-efficient network systems.

The technology integrates RDMA with an All-Photonics Network (APN) to facilitate an open and high-quality optical transmission environment. This significantly reduces CPU load, thereby decreasing both latency and energy consumption during data transmission. Compared to traditional network technologies, this innovative approach can reduce transmission time by nearly 95% under the same energy consumption conditions and 100 Gbps bandwidth of APN, establishing a favorable foundation for future innovative applications.

This technology supports high-performance data transmission while maintaining energy efficiency, and is versatile enough for extensive application in enterprise data centers and the financial services industry, among others. In response to the large amount of cross-cloud data traffic and electricity demand driven by the development of AI training and inference, Chunghwa Telecom will integrate APN construction with this technology in its own AI data centers. This integration not only enhances data privacy protection but also effectively reduces power consumption and ensures service stability.

Mr. Tian-Tsair Su, President of Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories, said, “In 2024, Chunghwa Telecom achieved an epochal milestone by establishing the world's first International APN connection between Japan and Taiwan through our cooperation with NTT. This recognition showcases our passion for pioneering futuristic applications and putting them into practice, which will greatly benefit Taiwan's development of sovereign AI infrastructure. We will collaborate with our global partners to create more innovative applications and promote the development of next-generation information and communication infrastructure based on IOWN technology and architecture, contributing to industrial upgrades and the digital transformation of society.”(in NT$ billion)
