Environmental Sustainability Strategy

Chunghwa Telecom’s environmental sustainability strategies in the next five years will incorporate three main focuses: “Green enterprise,” “Green sustainability,” and “Green innovation.”

In the environment section and CSR report, you may find most of green actions and reporting that we have executed in recent years. Our company's environmental indicators cover 100% of business operations.

 

 

Chunghwa Telecom Environmental Protection and Energy Saving Policy

As the leading telecommunication services provider in Taiwan, Chunghwa Telecom pursues sustainable operations coupled with business growth while providing both environmentally friendly and more energy-efficient telecommunication services to consumers. To further address issues regarding environmental sustainability, the Company has developed and integrated environmental protection, energy savings, carbon reductions, ecological concerns, green buildings and other related issues into its corporate culture. With the launch of environmental protection and energy saving action plans and the implementation of the sustainability management system, the Company hopes to achieve higher performance on environmental protection indicators and improve environment quality, thus developing a sustainable environmental direction for the Company.

In effort to fulfill the aforementioned commitments, Chunghwa Telecom will pursue environmentally friendly and energy saving policies listed below:

• Research and develop green products and expand the green economy;

• Lead suppliers into 5G(Green) Initiatives.

 

Long-Term Environmental Initiatives and Targets

• For buildings owned by Chunghwa Telecom, we aim to reach the goal of reducing 10 % of carbon emissions by 2023, with 2017 as the base year.

CHT is faced with great pressure to save energy and reduce carbon emission. For that matter, we have taken measures such as:

1. Energy management: Use self-developed systems to manage the use of all resources and keep track of energy use efficiency.

2. Retire old equipment: Including old and high-energy consumption air conditioners, office and operation center lighting fixtures, parking lot lighting fixtures, and emergency exit lights have been replaced with highly efficient and power saving ones, such as LED light bulbs.

3. Adjust and optimize equipment:

 

• Chunghwa Telecom expects to reach the capacity of power generated by renewable energy to 750 kWp by 2023.

In 2016, we announced the establishment of "Energy Office", locked in solar energy, wind power and LED three areas as the directions of development.

Chunghwa Telecom expects to make the best of its expertise in information and telecommunication, and the Internet of Things, while working together with county and city governments under their autonomous regulations of low carbon city development to promote the construction of renewable energy infrastructure.

As of the end of 2017, Chunghwa Telecom has established 45 solar power stations around the island, with a total capacity of 527 kWp. Solar power stations are scheduled to be set up in Taoyuan and Taichung. The capacity of power generated by renewable energy is expected to reach 750 kWp by 2023.

• Setting 2017 as the base year for Chunghwa Telecom’s energy saving project, we expect to reach a power reduction rate of 10% by 2023.

Under the global call for carbon emissions reduction, our company is faced with great pressure. To achieve the goal, CHT, while underscoring high-energy efficiency in its newly-built data centers, also keeps optimizing the operation of existing data centers with measures such as:

     1. Save electricity: Control power consumption by switching off stand-by units and equipment not in use, and installing localized lighting systems and independent switches.

    2.Manage air conditioning systems: Use a monitoring system to control temperatures in different sections. Adopt hot/cold aisle cooling design, temperature-controlled variable frequency pump, highly efficient air conditioner, and free cooling air conditioning.

    3.Fixed line telephone equipment: Reduce energy consumption of old and low-efficiency equipment by purchasing high-efficiency ones.

    4. Mobile communication: Speed up 4G mobile broadband applications and retire high energy-consuming 2G bases to greatly reduce electricity consumption.

Climate Change

Climate risk and opportunity management is an integral part of our business and decision-making processes and is embedded into Chunghwa Telecom entire organizational structure and business processes. The scope of evaluation includes all business groups of the Company.

CHT has incorporated the climate change factor into the evaluation system for Corporate Performance and Risk Management. Significant risks are listed in the annual corporate operating plan. Target management and performance evaluation are then conducted along with continuing certification and feedback activities. The key components of our risk management system include our CSR Policy, guidelines and reporting systems, strategy, planning, and controlling processes; Internal audit activities; the establishment of CSR committees and the requirement for Environmental Management Systems within all of our operations with significant risks.

The CSR Committee, which consists of representatives of key CHT’s environmental department, is responsible for ensuring that the risk strategy defined by the Board of Management is implemented, complied with, and further developed.

 

 

CHT Climate Risk Management Procedures

•  Evaluation conducted frequency depends on the business needs of individual group/department

  Criteria for determining materiality/priorities: Climate change risks and opportunities are determined with reference to probability of occurrence and severity and are measured against threshold values stipulated in the CHT’s Policy for Opportunity and Risk Reporting.

  To whom are the results reported: Risk reporting is fully integrated into our standardized budgeting and controlling processes. The asset level Risk Owner reports into their department manager. The Manager reports into CSR Committee member. Significant Risks at a company level are reported quarterly into the CSR Committee and the Board of Management. The information is also publicly communicated on CDP questionnaire and CHT CSR Report. 

Install curtains to reduce the workload of air conditioners and glass panels at front desks to fend off heat; Keep car parks minimally lighted during non-office hours; Install light sensors at staircases and in halls; Bring air from outside to reduce indoor temperatures, prevent air conditioning from covering unused space, improve air outlets of data centers’ air conditioning systems.
